The September 2011 iAWFUL

  1. Durbin-Conyers Main Street Fairness Act – A national mandate to collect sales tax for remote states would impose big burdens on small businesses.
  2. Puerto Rico Social Network Restrictions - Requires the “express consent” of a parent before a 17-year old can share their interests and activities with friends on a social network.
  3. Federal Data Retention Mandate – Forces ISPs to retain evidence of internet use by its paying customers, for later use by government investigators.
  4. State Affiliate Nexus Laws – An unconstitutional expansion of sales tax burdens to out-of-state businesses resulting in a loss of ad revenue supporting small online publishers.
  5. Federal Do-Not-Track Online – A Do-Not-Track law would reduce effectiveness of online advertising, causing more ads and less free content and services.
  1. Indiana eMail Registry for  Minors – Applies to unintended items such as supermarket flyers and ads for cars, and would cost marketers up to $72,000/year to comply.
  2. Missouri Teacher-Student Social Networking Law – Would scare good teachers away from using social networks as a teaching tool while failing to stop the real bad conduct.
  3. Tennessee Emotional Distress Law – Makes it a crime to send or post any image that could cause “emotional distress.”
  4. Massachusetts Anti-Staffing Bill – Imposes restrictions and costs on online employment services, deterring them from helping Americans find jobs.
  5. Digital Goods Taxes – Adds new taxes on the “greenest” way to deliver music, movies, software and books.
